S Song Lyrics - A to Z Challenge

This is an April Blog Challenge. Normal blog posts will resume in May.

So much more than moons and Junes
  • Song beginning with S
  • And lyric snippets

1960s:          Sounds of Silence - Simon and Garfunkel

1970s:          Summer Breeze - The Isley Brothers

1980s:           Stepping Out - Joe Jackson [...we are younger getting old before our time, we'll leave the TV and the radio behind...]

1990s:           Stay Another Day - East 17 [Baby if you've got to go away, I don't think I can take the pain...]

Sound/s of Silence

This song was originally called Sounds of Silence but Simon and Garfunkel dropped the plural in later recordings. Paul Simon said that he often shut himself in his echoey bathroom, turned out the lights and played his guitar. This was how he got much of his inspiration hence...

'Hello darkness, my old friend
I've come to talk with you again...'

Do you find that you do your best thinking when you're alone in the dark?

Summer Breeze

This song doesn't quite fit in with a lot of my other choices but it has such a positive effect on me that I decided to include it.

'...Summer breeze makes me feel fine
Blowing through the Jasmine in my mind...'

I don't know how a summer breeze could blow Jasmine in my mind but I love the thought and it always makes me think happy thoughts of warm summer days.

What song does this for you?

There must be lots of S songs that you'd like to have seen here.

  1. Interesting where Paul Simon found his inspiration. I always liked Simon and Garfunkel. Stepping Out reminds me of my college days. I wonder why you don't hear much about Joe Jackson anymore?

  2. I've always loved the isley Brothers...and Summer Breeze is gorgeous .I remember the first time I heard it on a really hot summer lunchtime...I was still at home with Mum and Dad. All the windows were open in the sitting room, and Johnnie Walker played this on radio 1. I was hooked!

Thoroughly enjoying all these music posts which are bringing back memories!

  3. I love listening to the Isley Brothers...great song! I'm going to have to find it later now, and remind myself how good it is...

  4. Love the Sound of Silence, the others are excellent examples of S songs.

  5. Sound of silence was THE song of the 60's. I remember some DJ used to play it almost every half an hour....I still think Paul Simon is an amazing lyricist - if you get a copy of one of the Songbooks and read the words, it's like reading poetry.

  6. Sing a Song of Sixpence ... song of the 70s, when the children were small. Somehow they couldn't get the hand of Simon and Garfunkle (shame!)

  7. East 17 and Joe Jackson two great songs, one of my S songs would be George Michael's version of Secret Love.

  8. I can never remember the names of songs I'm afraid but some of my best ideas come to me in the dark. Usually at about two in the morning when I have no pen around!

  9. I love Simon & Garfunkel in general, and this may be their most beautiful song. I had forgotten all about Steppin Out, that's a fun blast from the past. :)

  10. Sounds of Silence - *swoon* best LP (see? I remember LPs) ever. And Summer Breeze - gosh was that the 70s?

  11. I do all my best thinking in bed in the dark, the only problem is it keeps me awake. In the morning I realise that all the solutions I thought up were made by someone with a deranged mind.
Love Sound of Silence and all their songs.

  12. I just discovered your Blog on A - Z. Cool theme!
    A month of Blog...

  13. I love Summer Breeze too, Ros. I knew it by Seals & Croft, but it's the same song and I alos like the image of summer breezes blowing jasmine through me. Lovely! And yes, what can one say about Sounds of Silence. We all learnt it didn't we? i can still play it on my guitar. It's ingrained. Simon and Garfunkel were the voice and poets of our youth. Great choices again Ros. Thanks for reminding me of some precious songs!

  14. I loved Sound/s of Silence.

  15. You always manage to choose at least 2 songs I love, Ros. Today it's Sound of Silence and Summer Breeze. Completely different but both brilliant. Sound of Silence has the best first line ever and Summer Breeze just effortlessly evokes that feeling of long hot summers that sadly no longer seem to exist!

  16. Great songs. I just realized looking at the calendar that the month is almost over. This has been too fun and you've had us humming along nicely.

Sara Smile - Hall & Oates. Smooth sound. Oates went to my high school. both went to my college in Philly - Temple. A bit before my time, but that Philly soul is in my blood.

  17. Sound of Silence and Summer Breeze! Love them and I am going to listen to them while marking today!

  18. Hi Ros .. Sound of Silence and Summer Breeze - showing my age, but they are great .. and I'm looking forward to updating my ipod .. cheers Hilary
