1960s: Reach Out, I'll Be There - The Four Tops
1970s: Rocky Mountain High - John Denver
1980s: Romeo and Juliet - Dire Straits [...Juliet the dice were loaded from the start, and I bet and you exploded in my heart...]

Reach Out, I'll Be There
This was one of the many Motown songs written by Holland/Dozier/Holland. I have this track on an old-fashioned vinyl LP and, what's more, it's in mono!
'...if you feel that you can't go on
Because all of your hope is gone
And your life is filled with much confusion
Until happiness is just an ilusion...'
'...Reach out for me
I'll be there...'
A real friend is always there for you.
How do you define a true friend?
Rocky Mountain High
John Denver was passionate about Colorado and the wide open spaces that he made his home.
'...He walks in quiet solitude the forest and the streams
Seeking grace in every step he takes...'
'...his life is full of wonder but his heart still knows some fear
Of a simple thing he cannot comprehend.
Why they try to tear the mountains down to bring in a couple more
More people, more scars upon the land.
Colorado Rocky Mountain high...'
John Denver was concerned that the Colorado Mountains were being spoilt by the increase in tourism. In the UK the same concerns have been expressed about the Lake District.
Should we be allowed to walk wherever we please in our own countryside or should access be restricted to preserve areas of beauty?

I know there are lots of R songs that I could have included. Any favourites?
Good choices, got any good ones for X?
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your Sunday.
Yvonne.
I have a few X songs tucked away in my schedule. You?
DeleteAh, my good friends - they know when I need coffee, and when I need wine. Life would be impossible without them.
ReplyDeleteSounds like you have some perfect friends there, Jo.
DeleteHi Ros .. John Denver's songs do roll out the descriptions, while the Four Tops song - Reach Out, and I'll be there --- we always need someone don't we ..
ReplyDeleteLoving these but my love of music is poor - so I can't add to your list .. Raining in my Heart - came to mind .. I see it's by Buddy Holly - probably the 50s?
Cheers Hilary - it's lovely and sunny down here - cold though ...
Raining in my Heart was indeed the 50s but well worth a mention. He was a very talented man.
DeleteI love John Denver, Ros. In fact all of these. Great selection!
ReplyDeleteI adored John Denver. I was very upset when he died.
DeleteA true friend? I've been let down a bit by some of mine but that's another story. I think some areas do have to be persevered for the future we can't just keep doing what we like and expect the countryside to stay the same.
ReplyDeleteLove John Denver's songs.
I've had 'friends' like that too. Sorry you've been let down. I agree that we should preserve the countryside but perversely also want to walk through beautiful areas.
DeleteI am a Rod Stewart fan, and that particular song is a favourite of mine. :-)
ReplyDeleteReally enjoying your posts, they evoke so many happy memories, and a few sad ones too, but that is the rich tapestry of life.
Sorry to stir sad memories but like you say, rich tapestry (Carole King wrote Tapestry - lovely song but obscure meaning.)
DeleteI loved Rocky Mountain High!
ReplyDeleteWasn't it great!
DeleteGreat stuff!!! Old-fashioned vinyl? You are probably sitting on a fortune!! Sadly, I lost/gave away all my Beatles singles aand LP's. If only I'd kept them, I'd be in my villa in Tuscany ... ah....
ReplyDeleteThey're not worth a bean. I've tried selling them, even an Elvis 78!
DeleteI had a Jon Denver lp that i played constantly when I was little...singing my heart out!
ReplyDeleteI still have a John Denver LP but I don't have him on CD. Must do something about that!
DeleteRocky Mountain High is a great song - in fact most if not all of John Denver's songs are great
ReplyDeleteChippy
He had such a fabulous charm about him!
DeleteI love Rocky Mountain High, it always makes me want to visit Colorado. Love the Four Tops and that Rod Stewart song as well. I'm drawing a blank on the Dire Straits song, need to look that one up.
ReplyDeleteIt's a favourite of mine. Hope you like it.
DeleteThat's a difficult question whether we should have free access to our own countryside allowing it to get spoiled in the process. I am not surprised John Denver felt Colorado should be preserved. However nature does quite a lot of altering over time, so maybe it won't matter. Of course what does bug me is the people who leave garbage all over the place.
ReplyDeleteJO ON FOOD, MY TRAVELS AND A SCENT OF CHOCOLATE
I love Motown! The Four Tops were such a great group, and I think there's a new crop of performers.
ReplyDeleteJulie
More great songs, Ros. I'm a massive Motown fan, so the Four Tops have one of my votes (although, I always slightly preferred The Temptations) and Romeo and Juliet is a beautiful song with a timeless guitar intro and great lyric. My dad used to play that song in the car when we were kids - happy memories.
ReplyDeleteIf you like vinyl and 'proper' records, you may want to check out my V post in a couple of days - any guesses as to what it might be?!
