A to Z 1950s/60s Nostalgia: D

Some Ds to make you say, "Oh, yes!"

D Smell:
Dinners in the School Dining Room - That smell of soggy cabbage, lumpy mashed potato and solid custard will stay with me for ever. Who is responsible for the smell of school dinners?

D Memories:

Dancing - In the 50s it was the Jive but I was too young for that. I used to watch my sister and cousin jiving together. It looked so exciting. I couldn't wait til I was old enough. By the 60s the jive was out and the twist was in. "Pretend you're stubbing out a cigarette with your foot," was the advice. It wasn't an exciting dance. Neither was the 'shuffle and bob about' dance that followed it. Dancing had to wait for the 70s and Saturday Night Fever to become exciting again.

Dustmen - They let themselves in through the back gate and came into the garden, waving at us through the kitchen window. They carried the little metal dustbin on their shoulder, tipping all the rubbish into the dustcart and then returning the dustbin to the garden. The dustcart was a basic truck open at the sides and, in the summer, it was enveloped in a cloud of blue bottles.
