A to Z 1950s/60s Nostalgia: G

G Smell:
Gas - In those days we used coal gas with its metallic smell that was always vaguely lurking in everyone's kitchens. The natural gas we use today has no smell and a smell is added for safety.

G Memories:
Gangs - Teddy boys: In the 50s it was the teddy boys with their winkle picker shoes and drainpipe trousers. There was talk of gang fights with flick knives but I was too young to see it.

Mods and Rockers: In the 60s it was the Mods who wore smart suits and rode motor scooters, and the Rockers who wore leathers and rode motorbikes. They were always fighting, especially at seaside resorts on Bank Holiday weekends. The fights were apparently pre-planned - all this before the Internet. I never understood why they fought but I remember being scared by it.

Spike Milligan, Peter Sellers and Harry Secombe
from the Goon Show

G Programmes:
On TV:
The Grove Family
The Good Old Days, music hall theatre on the TV

On Radio:
The Goon Show, "Ying tong diddle eye foe!"
The Glums, "Ooooh, Eth."  "Ooooh, Ron."

Which Gs did you enjoy?

  1. Living in Australia in the fifties, I only read about the mods and rockers. It made powerful imagery. Those days seemed much more colorful.

  2. You've just reminded me of the film Quadrophenia :-)

  3. Hi Ros .. gas = yes, Goons and Glums = yes, Gagarin definitely, Gandhi certainly later, as too the other Gs ..

Good to be reminded though - great memories for all of us .. cheers Hilary

  4. The Goons! I'm not going into raptures again, don't worry LOL. I do love your posts, Rosalind, they bring back so much of what I'd forgotten.

  5. Geepers, that video zinged me right into dance land this morning. Keep em coming.

  6. Loving this wander down Memory Lane. I won first prize in a fancy dress comp when I went dressed as a teddy boy.
    Anyone remember Green Shield stamps?

  7. Love listening to Marvin Gaye sing!

The Goons!!!! We had several records of the Goons - my dad loved them. I'm now going to have Ying Ton, Ying Ton, Ying Ton... stuck in my head all day! Love it :)

  8. Never heard of the Teddy Boys. Your posts are always so fascinating. Thanks again for sharing all of this!

  9. I remember the smell of gas too. We watched The Good Old Days. I think I' m the only one who doesn't like The Goons, I just don't understand their humour.

  10. Never saw The Goon Show, but I probably would've liked it if Peter Sellers was on it. I also love Marvin Gaye's music! Thanks for a Great "G" post Rosalind, and Happy Passover to you and your family! Julie
