Knighton Post Office – an Obituary
Knighton Post Office was special. Roger, the Postmaster, knew us all, joked with the kids, sorted my manuscripts and stamped addressed envelopes, looked out for the frail elderly. It was the centre of our community... until they shut it down.
A quadragintal is a blog of exactly 40 words.
Why did they close it?

That is SO sad. But beautifully written in 40 words.
ReplyDeleteSorry Duncan, I was forgetting that those outside the UK wouldn't know. The government have seen fit to close down most of our small local Post Offices. Not good!
ReplyDeleteKudos for Knighton and your post.
ReplyDeletesounds like a very nice gentleman, its awful that they shut down your post office, sounds like it was rather quaint
ReplyDeleteGreat job and getting this done in 40 words! I'm sorry they shut it down- I could imagine anyone doing that here in Wyoming. Thanks for posting. I'm a new follower from A-Z

The annoying thing about the closures is that the ones they closed where the ones I used the most.
ReplyDeleteWhat is it with shutting down the village and small town post office. It is happening all over Ireland too.
ReplyDeleteAnd Roger is a wonderful trumpeter. On the day Knighton Post Office closed, a crowd of customers assembled in the drizzle to shed tears as Roger (in his sparkly waistcoat) stood beside the post box and played The Last Post. I'm welling-up as I remember it!
ReplyDeleteI know how you feel. I don't do well with change of public buildings.
ReplyDeleteThanks everyone for your comments and I'd forgotten about that, Pippa. Roger's wonderful sequined waistcoat that he wore each Christmas and on other special occasions. What a loss to our community!
