What do you mean it’s as good as a rest?

Changes are not restful. Changes make me tired. I don’t mean the daily things, like changing the sheets. There’s nothing nicer than snuggling beneath a freshly laundered quilt cover… or changing the dish cloth and washing up sponge. Apparently there are so many different kinds of bacteria living in dish cloths that it’s impossible to count them all. We’re supposed to change them every day and the same goes for underwear, but possibly for slightly different reasons. I sometimes change our daily newspaper order, although I don’t know why. They’re all as bad as each other and I have been known to try a different brand of toothpaste but only rarely. You see, the problem is that I don’t like changes.

I know that we have to have changes. If the world never changed then there would be no new inventions or discoveries, and that includes everything from antibiotics to astronauts, but given a choice I’d rather not. This could be the reason why I’ve lived in Leicester all my life. I can’t imagine what it would be like to live in a completely new location. I even have trouble when they change the layout of our local supermarket. I suspect they do it to increase sales but it just makes me irritable.

Sometimes we decide to change things round in the kitchen but this is never good for me. It throws me into a tizzy. I spend weeks reaching for plates where we now keep mugs or cereal bowls where the teapot now lives. It’s the same in the garden. Alan Titmarsh can dig up shrubs and replace them with different varieties all he likes. I prefer the garden to look exactly as it did last year… and the year before… and the year before that.

You may have noticed by now that I’ve recently faced a pretty major change. I’ve changed my blog template. I have to admit to being thrown into a clammy panic when I did it. You see, I didn’t intend to change it. I was trying to get rid of the embedded comments box and replace it with the pop-up variety. It should have been a simple case of ticking a button but the button has disappeared. A kind fellow blogger suggested it might reappear if I updated my blog template. It didn’t reappear but it is the reason why you’re now looking at this freshly designed page. I suppose I’ll get used to it soon. It’s just a bit of a… change.

What changes make you hopping mad? Or do you revel in variety?

  1. The new layout looks good, Rosalind.

In Michigan for a change I'm definitely not getting much rest and I've ricked my arm throwing a tennis ball for four manic dogs. I must admit though that I'm a man of routine but who can handle the routine changes made by my wife.

  2. I'm a creature of habit, as well. I'll usually order the same entree each time I visit a restaurant. Go figure. You'd think a writer would want to experience new things.

I'm panicking right now, since my wife and I are considering a move late this summer.

I like the template, by the way. Easy to navigate and read. (Just don't go changing it on me again, kay?) Just kidding.

  3. I don't do change at all. I can't deal with change in couples. I take their break-up harder than they do. I've gone through 2 boyfriend changes with my granddaughter and I carry on like it were happening to me.

  4. Thanks Bob, sorry to hear about your shoulder. Have you ever tried those ball 'wangers'? They take the effort out of ball throwing!

Hi Bryce, I'm just like that in a restaurant. No sense of adventure!

Hi Manzanita, I know what you mean re your granddaughter but it's better than accepting the first partner who comes along. I hope the right one turns up soon.

  5. Hi Ros .. as you know I can't comment without going into IE - which frustrates me, but at least I can comment as long as I type in my name and URL .. because the comment box is still embedded.

I know you've been doing your damndest to un-embed it ..

Wish Blogger would get its act together - or rather Google wouldn't fiddle!

Cheers - I'm happy to change when I decide to - not when I'm pushed! Though I was thinking of changing my blog around, but I think I might wait til Blogger's sorted life out.

We'll see what happens .. enjoy the day .. Hilary

  6. I like the blog template. It looks good.

As for change, I'm a bit of a mixed bag. I can get anxious if it's just thrown on me with no warning, but if I know it's coming I adapt really well and then wonder why everyone is hating the change!

  7. My hubby and I have moved 8 times to 7 different states in the 16 years we've been married and he's not even in the military! I don't like it any time we move because I get too attached to the people around me. But I finally realized that it has given me the wonderful opportunity to meet people that I never would have met. I now have friends all over the country. I still wouldn't choose to move again though!

I like your new template too. :)

  8. Change, that seems to be what we do often. We've lived in several counties in the UK, then Holland and now here. We've lived in probably 12 different house at least! I don't like all change, but we do like to make changes. We like to move things along and make things happen.

By the way, like the new Blog layout...! xx

  9. I teach small children and if I cannot go with the flow, you might miss the "teachable moment". I love the basic routine of things but I am always ready for something different. I love for everything to have a place, to be organized. But I also would jump in the car and go on an adventure at any time. Change, to me, is growth.

  10. It's actually the small changes that get to me. My father suddenly moved across the country while I was at university, I got a major hit, but I took it stoically.

Switch the knives, forks and spoons in the drawer and I start twitching.

    Maybe that makes me neurotic.
    :-D

  11. This is a really nice, soft orange. I like your new look. It's a good change!

Change is always hard. Minor technical changes (e.g., facebook makes changes all the time, and it's when I just got a basic concept down) make me hopping mad. I won't get started on blogger.

    Be well, Rosalind.

  12. I don't like to change things very much either. I've practically had the same hairdo since I was 10! Though I do get a little experimental when new M & M's come out! The blog template looks very welcoming. Julie

  13. Change can be good or not so good, I try to embrace most things but sometimes it takes me awhile.

    I hope you're having a wonderful weekend! ;-)

  14. Hi Rosalind,
The new look of your blog is nice!
I recently changed mine too as I was very tired of the old look!
I'm kind of a creature of habit but one change I always love is traveling.
Nice to go on new adventures but also nice to come back home.

    Enjoy your weekend.

  15. Hi Ros
I live with a man who has ritualised many areas of life and when we talk about it he says he likes the comfort of , say, saying the same things at bedtime, laying the table in the same way, and I suppose I am that way myself or it would have driven me mad. I fight it tooth and nail mind and push the boat out and do little things like changing my desktop images often to keep me on my toes!
