Macmillan's World's Biggest Coffee Morning

Welcome! It's lovely to see you

This party will continue until Sunday evening
so everyone gets a chance to come along
Would you like tea? Coffee? Something cold? My sister, Hilary, is in charge of the drinks. Her speciality is coffee, freshly ground. [She’s the classy one of the family. I prefer instant! I’m such a pleb.] Perhaps you’d rather have a glass of wine? She can rustle up absolutely anything! No trouble!

As for me, I’ve been busy in the kitchen
*fingers crossed behind back*
I've been making ice cream and snacks so do help yourself.

[Just think how much easier life would be if it was all virtual. We could have anything we wanted by just thinking about it... or would the novelty wear off?]

Ah! You noticed that I’m wearing FANCY DRESS! I bet you thought I was a real parrot for a minute there. Difficult to do? Not at all! I stitched each feather on by hand. Every feather is a different colour and my wings are tied on with wire. Good, isn't it! "Squawk!"

Do tell me what you’ve come as.  I can't wait to hear about it. *jumps up and down with excitement* There’ll be a Coffee Morning Fancy Dress Award for the most ingenious/amusing fancy dress outfit.

Which reminds me... COFFEE MORNING JOKES!
There’s a Coffee Morning Jokes Award too. [Clean jokes only please. Remember that I’m a Grandma!] Extra points will be awarded for coffee morning topics and they don't have to be hilariously funny. I’ll start us off to show you what I mean... *clears throat*
Knock, Knock... Come on!!... someone answer me!!!!...
      “Who’s there?”
Thank you! That’s more like it! Honey bee.
     “Honey bee who?
Honey bee a dear and get me a nice cup of tea.

And now for the serious bit. This coffee morning has been registered with the Macmillan Cancer Support team and they have given us the ok to run our coffee morning virtually.

As regular visitors to this blog will know, our mother, Frances Denning, died of cancer in April of this year. The Macmillan nurses were there for her during those last few weeks and this is our way of thanking them.

We've set up a memorial page through JustGiving so that donations will go straight to the Macmillan Cancer Support team. Please visit the page at http://www.justgiving.com/Frances-Denning.

Thank you for coming along and we hope you've enjoyed our
Macmillan World's Biggest Coffee Morning
The fun will continue until Sunday evening.
Do pop back after you've visited the Frances Denning memorial page
There'll still be plenty of tea in that pot.

  1. I'll gladly join you, both in the coffee and in the gratitude for the people who help make us whole again when we are sick.

  2. Welcome, Mariam. You're the first to arrive so there's loads of food. Do help yourself. Have you come dressed as anyone?

    ReplyDelete
  3. I'm in my fancy purple silk ball gown, the one with the feathers on the shoulder. And I'm wearing matching shoes. I'm dressed as MOI. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  4. And very lovely you look too, Mariam. Fabulous shoes. Can I try them on? Oh no. I forgot. I'm dressed as a parrot and parrots don't wear shoes. Maybe next week!

  5. What a wonderful idea and I'd love a cup of tea, no sugar just milk. I am dressed in my kangaroo costume and bouncing round the room as we speak, I have a little joey in my pouch his name is Lyle, he's sleeping at the moment but I'm sure he would like some juice when he wakes up. Until then I'll have some tea and a scone and stop bouncing around and put my feet up.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Hope the tea was just right. Love that kangaroo tail of yours ;-) We've got any sort of juice Lyle fanices. How about kiwi juice?

  7. Hello everyone, Extra large pot of coffee ready - smells delicious. I can hardly move in this outfit and I am so hot. Might nip and change later. I'm Pooh Bear complete with honey pot and wasps!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  8. Hi Hilary/Rifka, I forgot to tell everyone that my sister is also known by her middle name, Rifka. Hang on!! Where have all these wasps come from? Hilary! Get rid of that honey pot! Now!! You know how I hate wasps!!!

    ReplyDelete
  9. Kiwi juice is fine and the tea and scones are lovely. Now I see Pooh bear but where are piglet and tigger?

    ReplyDelete
  10. Sorry sis, forgot you hate wasps - good way to loose weight though - running away from them. That's not my joke by the way but this is. "What do aliens use with their teacups?....... flying saucers". I Love everyone's fancy dress, you all look great. I'm off to change into something cooler.

    ReplyDelete
  11. What a great idea. And I'm a complete coffee-a-holic. Yes, I take cream.

I'll have to try not to spill on my lovely leftover bridesmaid's dress. It's purple chiffon with genuine rhinestones, you know. Do you like the large yellow bow on the back? My friend picked it out and was delighted with her choice.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Hi Cassam, How did you guess - yes here I am as Tigger - its great fun bouncing around the kitchen with the coffee pot. Whoops there goes the cream jug............oh dear I think I've knocked it over someone's yellow bow.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Sorry, L.G., my sister is very clumsy when she's being Tigger. I'm sure the bow will wash. *scrubs at chiffon* There it's all clean again and yes you look lovely in your bridesmaid dress :-)

More cake anyone? We haven't started this chocolate one yet. There are NO CALORIES in it! Honest!

    ReplyDelete
  14. Guy walks into a bar and asks for a crocodile sandwich and make it snappy!

It's been a long day... best we could do.

    ReplyDelete
  15. [Hey! Look smart everyone. The bosses are here!] Hi World's Biggest. Welcome. That's the best joke contributed so far!!

    ReplyDelete
  16. Ooh! The coffee smells delicious, and I do believe I'll help myself to one of those decadent-looking donuts! You'll note MY fancy dress - I'm wearing earrings with my overalls and hip waders.

So glad to contribute to something so important. Thank you for inviting me to the coffee.

Also, Rosalind, you were the winner of my present giveaway so pop me an email when you get a chance at susanna@susannahill.com!

  17. For the past few years, my niece (who as of tonight is no longer living in London but on her way to Singapore) hs coerced, er, encouraged my sister to do the 20 mile London nighthike organised by Maggie's Cancer Care centre to raise funds - this year she managed to get her Dad & brother to join her and they raised nearly 5000 pounds between the four of them! (And had a ball on the walk as well!) Hope you did as well with your coffee morning!

    Judy, South Africa

    ReplyDelete
  18. Hi Susanna, glad you like the donuts. they're completely calorie free, you know! Love the outfit. Earrings and hip waders should ALWAYS go together. Classy! And thank you so, so much for the prize. I'll email.

Hi Judy, what an amazing achievement to raise £5000 for Maggie's Cancer Care. We're not aiming quite so high with this coffee morning but as we're part of the Macmillan's world-wide biggest coffee morning I know that our contribution will, together with everyone else's, make a difference.

  19. HELLO! If I could interrupt all the chatter for just a minute... yes I'll be fetching out some more ginger cake... yes, I know my parrot feathers are dropping off, thank you... I just want to make a quick announcement:

Our current total raised here so far is *roll of drum* £112.50. Thank you so much and just a reminder, the donations made go straight through to Macmillan Cancer Support.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Hi Rosalind! Wow, congrats on the donations so far, how wonderful!!! Big round of applause from me! :)

As for the coffee, I'll take some with extra cream, please. And, the doughnut looks fabulous, yum.

I noticed you have Tigger and Winnie the Pooh already here, but no Piglet yet. So I decided to come as Piglet, I'm in my little pink pig best. I know Pooh needs his little buddy with him. :)

Thanks for hosting, this is fun. And I hope the total keeps rising!!!

    ReplyDelete
  21. "Wow" that's brilliant.....Big thank you from me too. Just in case we haven't been introduced - there are so many people here - I'm the sister inside a Tigger suit with a stripy tail and a funny nose. Oh....Ros I think I'd better get the hoover out, those feathers are getting everywhere. "More coffee anyone...................."

    ReplyDelete
  22. Thanks for the applause, Piglet...er... I mean Julie, and for your blog post :-) The donuts are yummy, especially with cream in them (and remember there are NO calories in any of this food!) I love your little pink pig outfit. I bet it took ages to make!

    ReplyDelete
  23. If you've got to vacuum, Rifka, can you do it quickly cause I'm holding my little parrot legs up and you're chatting over by the bowls of crisps!!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Wow, I see the party's in full swing. As you can see I'm Eeyore. It's not an accurate costume because I'm smiling but I'm sure you won't mind :-)

I have a joke too - Doctor doctor, my right eye hurts whenever I drink coffee. Well take the spoon out then :-)

Now, did someone mention chocolate cake?

    ReplyDelete
  25. Hi Sarah, I love Eeyore. The only think I don't like about him is his miserable face so your outfit is just perfect. And I love the joke too. Hahahahaha!!! Did I say that the chocolate cake has NO calories in it? Well it hasn't so do have a large slice... with a squirt of cream... there. Delicious.

Any crisps anyone? Peanuts? I've got a bag of pretzels somewhere here.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I'll be Roo. What a wonderful party, and for such a great reason. Julie sent me over. :)

    ReplyDelete
  27. I always feel so warmly welcomed here. Thank you, Rosalind.
Blessings to you for a peaceful New Year. May your kindness come back to you in abundance.
    xoRobyn

    ReplyDelete
  28. Hi M and welcome. Love the Roo outfit. It IS an outfit, isn't it! *pulls at ear* Sorry! That was attached! Have a cupcake :-)

Hi Robyn and thank you for your kind words. Have some cake. Yes of course it's chocolate... yes with chocolate icing... yes and chocolate cream filling... oh alright. I'll sprinkle some chocolate flake over the top for you ;-) There! Enjoy!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Morning everyone. Fresh pot of my special Italian Coffee brewing and I've brought a yummy lemon drizzle cake - can you guess what I've come as today - go on guess. The ears are a bit of a give away. Yes today I'm Mickey Mouse........... just remembered I forgot to put the vacuum round. Ros can you put your little parrot legs up again for me - that's great thanks.........

    ReplyDelete
  30. Hi Hilary, sorry you're having such trouble posting on my blog. Fabulous outfit, dahling! Medieval lute is so now! And you've brought cake. Don't mind if I do *splutters crumbs as I eat* I'm going to have to take this parrot beak off!

If anyone else is having trouble please email me at rosalind.kathryn @ googlemail.com . Thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Hi Rosalind! I remembered this yesterday, but then got sidetracked and forgot! I'm glad the party is still going... any coffee left? Or, with today's heat, iced coffee? :) This is such a fantastic idea, and for such a great cause.

Right, now for my joke. Get ready to groan!

There was a big fight at my local fish and chip shop last night. A lot of fish got battered.

I told you it was bad! :)

    ReplyDelete
  32. Hi Talli, Let me introduce myself I'm Rifka/Hilary - Ros's sister. Lovely to meet you. Yes there is lots of coffee left, I've just brewed another fresh pot and there is a jug of iced coffee in the fridge. "Wow" what a hot day. Shall we go and listen to Hilary playing her medieval lute in the shade of the tree................

    ReplyDelete
  33. Like you, I'm a pleb and prefer instant. Can't stand the taste of percolated coffee. Don't have a joke, but had a laugh at Talli's joke.

Wishing you success with this cancer fighting venture.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Mmmm, great cause, great coffee, and yummy donuts. What more could a girl ask for? I'll tell you I'm in my lovely pale yellow dress. (I'm really in my jammies.) ;-) (And I'm always late. Must get to places on time.) Will leave a donation at link you gave us. My dadai passed from Kidney cancer. (((hugs)))

    ReplyDelete
  35. I'm back. Popped out for milk. *spits parrot feathers from mouth* You lot are certainly knocking back the coffees. Here you are, sister, more milk and don't spill this lot. Are you still dressed as Tigger... and bouncing? *rolls eyes as more milk flies into air*

Battered fish! lol! I get it, yeah, thanks Talli.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Hi. J. L., Rifka has made you a lovely instant coffee I see. Hope you're enjoying it. Do have another piece of cake. We've got so much of it. Sorry. That's a parrot feather on your plate. They do seem to be falling off me rather rapidly.

Hi Robyn, I love your yellow dress. Yellow is such a pretty colour. I have yellow parrot feathers down my back. Sorry to hear about you dadai. That's the serious side of this party but we're determined to raise money with a smile this weekend... *spits out another parrot feather*

    ReplyDelete
  37. Gosh sis - more feathers for me to vacuum and poor J.L has one on his plate. Hi Robyn can I nudge you over a bit and pick up these parrot feathers...."whoops" - oh dear I've got some pale yellow material caught in the vacuum hose" ...........

    ReplyDelete
  38. How nice to find fellow instant coffee drinkers at this party!
Good cause this is - just back from supporting my mum who lost her partner to cancer 10 days ago. I think he would like me to come as something Welsh..so daffodil - no daffy duck!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Oh Susan, so sorry to hear about you mum's partner. Cancer is evil. Thanks for popping in at this difficult time. I have to say you're a mean daffy duck. Yellow is definitely your colour and my sister makes a great cup of instant coffee, doesn't she.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Morning all!

Good to see so many happy smiling faces.

I've readjusted my parrot feathers, I can smell freshly brewed coffee and the cake is pile high so tuck in!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Hi Rosalind, what a lovely party and I do like your parrot costume. I've come as a black cat - lucky for some. No jokes but my party piece is that if you tickle me behind the ears I purr loudly. Hope your own cats don't take offence! I love real coffee, so I'll have some of that please and a donut if there are any left. Then I'll nip over to your fundraising site. It's an excellent cause.

  42. COMMENT FROM ALISON BACON

Had to pop along before getting ready for a family barbie. What a great idea to do a 'Virtual Macmillan'. My Mum who died many years ago now, was greatly helped by them, and of course we have now seen more than one friend affected by the Big C., some of them lucky enough to see it through, others not.

I've decided to come in my swimsuit, by the way, which is a rather stylish (On the hanger of not on me!) black and white number with a slightly retro feel (yes that is me). It's hot enough after all, and maybe our neighbours will take the hint and invite us to use their pool (since we have to put up with the nasty whine of its pump - whoops - not the time for a rant!)
Enjoy your day and hope you make a mint - will do the giving bit in a mo.
    AliB

    ReplyDelete
  43. Hi Anabel, as a parrot I'm feeling a little nervous getting close to such a convincing black cat. You won't scratch my wings, will you? There are masses of donuts. Here, have two... with extra cream... oh no, we're not supposed to give our cats cream these days, are we. Funny how cat feeding fads change.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Hi Ali, you are sooo brave to come along in that swimsuit. It's very stylish but you know what our country's like. The sun could go in at any moment. I have some spare parrot feathers if you get cold. My sister, Rifka's just blowing up the paddling pool. You might like to sit in that!

    ReplyDelete
  45. Purr! Cream will do nicely, thank you very much. It's ok, I'm wary of parrots so you are quite safe. Don't like sharp beaks!

    ReplyDelete
  46. COMMENT FROM PIPPA GOODHART

Heck, Ros, what a mess! Parrot feathers and crumbs everywhere! But, yes, a mug of coffee for me, please. I can't be doing with rattling cups and saucers. A mug holds more, and, besides, it leaves one hand free for making that donation. Well done to you and Rifka. I'm sure your mum would be very proud.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Hi everyone, Paddling pool ready for use with lovely cool water, just had a quick splash myself, ohhh that's better. I've changed into my last outfit of the weekend - I'm Ginger Rogers - took ages to do the hair but I think its worth it.............. "can I top anyone's cup up".

    ReplyDelete
  48. In that case!!! *roll of drums* I've changed into Fred Astaire. Thank goodness I've got rid of those parrot feathers! Let's dance, sis!

... while there's moonlight and music... la la la la la... let's face the music and DANCE!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  49. While we're dancing sis, oh and love that top hat, lets do our "Sister's" song for everyone, you know "Sisters, sisters there were never such devoted sisters......................"
Why *pauses* is everyone moving slowly away!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  50. ... many men have tried to split us up but no one can... NOBODY CAN...

I've got a twirling bow tie on too *does amazing tap dance routine on the cake table*

    ReplyDelete
  51. Bzzzzz I hope I'm not too late - had a very very buzy few days dropping off all that honey at new year tables but now I've dropped in for a cup of coffee ( don't tell the Queen I've nipped off for a break she's a real slave-driver)
Haven't got a lot of time - hope you've got some honey cake to make me feel really at home.
Hi Hilary/Rifka - nice to see you long time since we saw each other

nu already so where's the coffee - I can't hover here chatting all day you know

    ReplyDelete
  52. Hello Ann - long time no see. Just taken a freshly baked honey cake out of the oven and the coffee is just how you like it - real buzzzzing!!! Hover over here and I'll pour you a cup........... "What a buzy Bee you are". Time for a hug?

    ReplyDelete
  53. Loved being at your party, though wore the wrong outfit, so hot....came as a big huggy bear...mistake in this heat! Never mind it has all been done in a good course. Thanks for all the wine... hic and the lovely cakes.... phew!
Big huggy bear hugs.... laugh! xx

    ReplyDelete
  54. Great to see you, Pauline. You are looking a bit red in the face though. Have an ice cream... quick... lick it before it melts all over your lovely yellow fur! Ali certainly had the right idea in her swimsuit. Look at her all smug and grinning at us from the paddling pool *waves sweetly*

    ReplyDelete
  55. Tea please! Chai or Earl Grey if you have it! :) Looks like I'm a little late to the party (it's been that kind of weekend...). Glad I didn't miss it all :)

Now, off to click on that link and see if they'll take a Canadian donation! :)

    ReplyDelete
  56. Hi Jemi, Great to meet you. Yes - have just opened a fresh packet of Earl Grey........ hang on and I'll pour you a cup. There are lots of nuts and crisp left - do help yourself. Its been a great party and its not over yet. I think Ros might still be tap dancing on the cake table!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  57. Too late to register that I'm still here? I went to a boring coffee morning, in the Town Hall, drank indifferent coffee and ate an indifferent cake.

Then came home and put on my fairy frock. Life has been a bit different since then . . .

(This is a great idea, Ros. Cancer takes the best people.)

    ReplyDelete
  58. Just in time, Jo. Love that fairy frock. Life does feel different when you're dressed as a fairy (sounds like an idea for a story plot) And unfortunately, you're right. If cancer only took cruel, evil people wouldn't this be a different kind of world but...
