I used to knit most evenings but that was over twenty years ago. Last autumn I got the urge to knit once more but now I'm wondering which of the following sayings is correct.
It's like riding a bike
OR
Practice makes perfect
The jacket in the above photo is no more. I hid it away for many months and finally, with a heavy heart, forced myself to unpick and unravel each piece.
I have now bought a different jacket pattern and, after much discussion with the lady in our local knitting shop, Knit One, I'm using smaller needles to get rid of the loopy dishcloth effect but I needed to be sure that this was going to fit so I quickly knitted halfway up the back [causing my fingers much arthritic-related pain] and here is the result.
I think this time it might just fit me. I've decided that the most appropriate saying is,
So now if you'll excuse me, I have some knitting to do because this jacket is exactly what I need for this year's chilly winter.

All the best with this one, Rosalind.
ReplyDeleteYour knitting reminds me of myself and my WIP. I'm redrafting the whole thing again :) -- but I don't think I would have the patience to unravel and re-knit a jacket.
I certainly have more motivation to rewrite stories that haven't worked although I think the cost of the wool has been a great motivator!
DeleteHappy knitting Ros! My mum loves it and knits all sorts of clothes for babies (my daughters and my sister's daughter)
ReplyDeleteDuncan In Kuantan
My mum always used to have knitting on the go. I think it went out of fashion for a while but it's certainly back with hand-knits featuring everywhere.
DeleteI liked the first one too, but it might be uncomfortable with 2 other ladies in there with you. Ha
ReplyDeleteI just recently did the same to a sweater I had started years ago. I think I hadn't bought enough yarn and the dye lots are never the same so it sat in the attic, unfinished. I finally unraveled it. Your stitches are even and beautiful. You will be enjoying your sweater very soon.
Here's something I plan on knitting for girlfriends for Christmas. Fingerless gloves. There are some patterns on YT for the ones that are straight across without individual fingers. Just knit a rectangle, sew up the side leaving a small space for the thumb. They are great for driving. My friends are asking for them but I want to finish a pair of socks first. I better get knitting too.
Fingerless gloves! What a lovely idea. A practical and personal gift. If I ever finish this jacket I'll consider that.
DeleteKeep knitting, Ros - I've knitted for years. When the children were small I decided I'd never knit something I didn't like, so no school cardigans or cricket sweaters. Instead I played with colours, and patterns. Most things fitted someone well enough - and I know exactly what you mean by the loopiness - I did scarves for all the girls with some glorious wool and huge needles. They were lovely, but the stretched and s t r e t c h e d and s t r e t c h e d until they were too long even as a joke!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad it's not just me who has loopy knitting experiences.
DeleteThat first attempt does look sort of chunky. ;)
ReplyDeleteSort of chunky? You're being polite. It was a disaster!
DeleteThat second sweater looks like it's going to be a winner. A winter winner.
ReplyDeleteI never learned how to knit, but I've crocheted since I was a teenager. There's something so cozy about an afghan covering your lap in the wintertime while you work on it. But BOY, do we... and everyone in our family... have a bunch of afghans now!
I love crocheting. In fact my crocheting is more even than my knitting but the range of patterns are a bit limited.
DeleteGood for you! My mom tried to teach me to knit as a kid but I never did get the hang of it!
ReplyDeleteYou should try crocheting in that case. It's easier and quicker. There's sure to be a crochet class near you somewhere.
DeleteRosalind, I bet the jacket will be lovely when you finish it!
ReplyDeleteMy mom used to knit and made some wonderful creations.
I have always told myself I would take up knitting but as yet have not.
Oh, thank you for the kind words on my poem.
Yes, Gossiping in the Jewish religion is an "evil tongue" and forbidden by Jewish law.
I converted to Judaism when I married over 30 years ago.
One of the great joys in my life is being Jewish!
Take care and "happy knitting"
You should give knitting a try, Margie. It's very relaxing.
DeleteGood for you Ros .. I can't stand wool near me ... so have always never been able to knit nor wanted to .. very clever to settle and knit though - good luck .. cheers Hilary
ReplyDeleteI can't stand wool either. This is a cotton mix which makes it more bearable.
DeleteHuge difference! You are more patient than I am. It would have ended up in a Goodwill bin at my house. I never learned how to knit, but have crocheted in years past. I'd have a learning curve for sure!
ReplyDeleteCrocheting is good too. I'm halfway through a crocheted shrug but that could take some time to finish.
DeleteRos, you are marvellous! What patience! I don't think I could have unpicked something I'd spent so long making like that. I'd probably have framed it - no one I know would have believed I'd knitted anything and finished it, so I'd have needed the evidence. I hope it doesn't make your arthritis worse! Well done you. I shall look forward to seeing the end result!
ReplyDeleteYou might have unpicked if you'd paid as much as I did for the wool!
Deletegood on you Ros! I can't knit...,my mother did try to teach me though my first piece, a scarf, ended up like crochet on acid...holes everywhere!
ReplyDeleteHmmmm. Crochet on acid. What a mental picture!
DeleteWhat a cute and cozy sweater! You have to post a photo of you modeling it this winter. Your perseverance really paid off Rosalind!
ReplyDeleteJulie
If I ever finish it I'll post up a piccy :-)
DeleteHappy knitting, Ros! It's been so long since I knitted, I don't remember how to do it any more! ~Miriam
ReplyDeleteYou'd remember. It's like riding a bike!!
DeleteLooking good Ros, Knitting has enjoyed a revival recently, I haven't done any for eighteen years!
ReplyDeleteAnd there are some amazing wools around too.
DeleteJust last night my daughter unraveled a scarf that was a little wonky and started knitting a hat. Hope you are pleased with this second attempt, Rosalind =)
ReplyDeleteThanks and I hope your daughter has a great hat to wear!
DeleteSo - crappy pattern or wrong size needles? I rarely knit - the last whole garment was a cardigan with a train round the hem for my three-year-old son. He adored it and refused to wear anything else for over a year. He's 35 now - I must ask him if he still remembers it like I do. My winter hobby is crochet, and the same son and his wife now sleep under one of my blankets during their Canadian winter.
ReplyDeleteThought you were going to say, you must ask him if he still wears it! Lol
DeleteIt's like riding a bike, you never forget, but you do wobble a bit at a new start. That's all that happened in knitting world - a little wobble. I think you'll be very snug by winter. Good luck and enjoy your hobby again.
ReplyDeleteThanks, I am enjoying it but taking it slowly due to fingers.
DeleteI used to knit all the time mostly baby clothes because I have no patience for big things. I bet there's a plus size woman somewhere longing for a jacket like that. Hope the next one fits.
ReplyDeleteWell she's not getting her hands on it cause it's no longer in existence!
