It’s the small things in life that can lift the spirits… or
so they say. Last week was not an easy week. Large things kept tripping me up,
so I thought I’d share with you some of the small things that helped me through:
On Monday I saw a tiny wren hopping around in the hawthorn
bush, its feathers ruffling in the
wind.
On Tuesday I heard the chimes of a far-off ice-cream van and
I was six years old again, wearing tartan shorts, white socks and scuffed
sandals.
On Wednesday I baked biscuits.
On Thursday I walked past someone who was wearing Yardley’s Tweed Perfume and
it reminded me of aunts and cousins and times gone by.
On Friday I painted my toe nails the colour of aubergine
skins.
What small things have you done recently?
You are correct. It is the small things that can cheer. I was having a "bad" day and just sat on the patio and looked at our bright pink crape myrtle tree. You know - I got out of the funk and moved on. And my husband somehow knows to text just the right thing to make me laugh during the day. So he did his share. And you've written this post - a very good thing
ReplyDeleteSo glad I was able to contribute to the banishment of your 'bad' day :-)
DeleteI'm sorry you had such a rough week - and know just what you mean about finding joy in small things. I hope things are settling down for you.
ReplyDeleteSmall things that console me - that cup of tea in bed first thing in the morning, the blackbird who parades my garden warning of cats, a grandchild giving me a kiss without prompting from a parent ...
Thanks Jo. I love my early morning cup of tea too.
DeleteI'm also sorry to hear your week was such a trial, Ros. It's lovely to read about the things that have cheered you up though and I hope it stays that way. The little things that have touched me recently were seeing bees in the garden for the first time this year, watching the sun setting over the fields like gold bars of light, and seeing my poor old dog trying to grin with pleasure at seeing me. In general, though, laughter is absolutely the best cure for a bad week and I am lucky to have people around me whose nonsense will always lift my blues!
ReplyDeleteLove the sound of those gold bars of light :-)
DeleteSmall things: Walk Sir Poops and Hair Ball, watch the cardindals flit from one tree to another, took a nap, and keeping up with my workouts.
ReplyDeleteHugs and chocolate,
Shelly
Walking those super dogs I can relate to but workouts? Hmmm, not so sure!
DeleteWe went outside three nights in a row to see the space station. It sounds like a big thing, but as it was just a fast moving bright white light, methinks it can fall under the little things. Take care!
ReplyDeleteI've seen that. It's a strange emotion, a mixture of "Is that it?" and "Wow! There are people up there looking down at us down here looking up at them."
DeleteYea it is the small things in life that leaves an everlasting impression.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing yours.
Yvonne.
You're welcome, Yvonne.
DeleteSorry about your large things. My small things include reading a short romance or anything that takes me away from my world, dancing, walking, chocolate and, above all, talking to people. ~Miriam
ReplyDeleteChocolate! Now you're talking ;-)
DeleteOh please wear tartan shorts tomorrow!
ReplyDeleteThey wouldn't fit me after all these years.
DeleteGlad to hear you are feeling better ans you are right the little things, make a difference. One little thing happened this week, well it was really a big thing and it certainly made my day and that was your lovely email. I hope you had a fabby birthday and you are smiling. As always licks from the pouches and fluffy hugs from me.
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome and I haven't forgotten my promise to write a blog post for your lovely blog :-)
DeleteSmall things? Today I watched a small bird eating a date that had fallen about a metre in front of me. It was a youngster and its parents were yelling, "Get up here - danger!" but it was too intent on the date to listen.
ReplyDeleteAnd it was perfectly safe with you, of course.
DeleteWhat a great week. I'd love to be able to bake biscuits, but for some reason they never work for me.
ReplyDeleteThis biscuit recipe is foolproof. It's from the Evelyn Rose International Cookbook.
DeleteYour are very correct, it is the small things that can reset the balance of life so that the big things do not overwhelm us. For my week: cuddles with my fluffy tortie cat (monday & tuesday); smooth flight into Wellington (New Zealand) which is highly unusual - we are normally tossed about quite a bit; almost a whole day browsing bookshops of Wellington (Wednesday); reading newly purchased books (Thursday); smooth flight out of Wellington (Friday)- again another unique experience, anything to do with Wellington involves the stronger forces of nature! Arriving home to the Waikato region, lots of rural landscape, very little time in traffic; seeing my family's faces again. Saturday morning, catching up with big sister in England (earlier enough to catch her before her bed time) and, heard a bird with a lovely song this morning.
ReplyDeleteI'd call most of those big things. You've certainly had a busy week.
DeleteOoh I love Tweed. It's such a lovely scent.
ReplyDeleteI didn't do much except start doing yoga again. And then I went to the chiropractor after I fell on the staircase in my home. Luckily, no serious injuries.
Oh no, sorry to hear about the fall. Will you still be able to do the yoga though?
DeleteI did some baking this week... a chocolate cake for hubby. Though I did indulge in a piece or two myself:)
ReplyDeleteIt's not physically possible to bake chocolate cake and not have some yourself. Anyway it would have been very rude!
DeleteIn the last week, I've had time to make scrambled eggs for breakfast, sat on a bench in the park and took in the world around me, enjoyed watching wild rabbits munching on grass, and sipped tea in the shade, on a beautiful afternoon in June. I call these wonders small pleasures. Life is all the better when we appreciate the small stuff.
ReplyDeleteHope some of the bigger stuff has sorted itself out for you.
Rabbits munching. You've outdone me for small wonders there. How lovely.
DeleteThere was a lot of meaning to what you call the small things. Then in reality, "they" must be the big things.
ReplyDeleteI see what you mean, Manzanita, but I suppose the big things are the things we have to do in life. These things are optional extras.
DeleteYou wore tartan short? Ah tweed perfume, so many memories.Do you remember Cachet perfume,it was the first bottle of perfume I ever had,I'd love to smell it again. My small things was when toddler boy said I was the only one who read him stories and my granddaughter finaly saying gran when all she could manage before was Anne, priceless.
