Bleak Mid-Winter

It’s been a week of two halves [and I thought I’d explain why I’ve not been around to visit many blogs this week.]

On the bleak side Mr A has had a bad attack of flu. His temperature soared to scary heights on Tuesday. His resistance has never fully recovered from the stem cell transplant two years ago and so any attack like this has to be carefully monitored. Thankfully the antibiotics have kicked in and he’s slowly recovering.

On the bright side there have been lots of Chanukah celebrations, donuts and latkes to eat [traditional Chanukah food - I’ve explained why at the bottom of this post] candles to light and parties to prepare and organise.

And this morning the changing view from my Writing Den window reflected my week’s two halves.

A frosty -4 degrees   :-/

And then the sun came out   :-)

[Donuts and latkes and all things fried: In the year 168 BCE the Jewish Temple was seized and defiled by the enemy. There is always a symbolic light burning in the Temple but in those days each jug of oil lasted for only one day. During the siege that one jug lasted for eight days. This is why we eat fried food during Chanukah, to remind us of the miracle.]

  1. Good luck and health to Mr A and I hope he's feeling much better very soon.

I've not much experience of Jewish food, beyond bagels and lox (which I love!). I really would like to learn more and to find somewhere I could try it.

I light lots of candles at this time of year too (I'm Pagan - it's supposed to be a way to remind the sun to come back as the days get shorter....)

    1. Candles are lovely, aren't they. I light them round my bath and relax into the bubbles :-)

    1. Sorry to hear about the diet. What a bore but better safe than sorry... and they're a bit overrated, really they are!

  5. Hi Ros .. so pleased Mr A seems to be on the mend - always a worry. The donuts and latkes sound delicious .. but would not do my health any good, though I did like learning about the history behind the tradition.

Look after yourselves and I hope all health returns by next week .. this weather is a bit much - and worse with you ... thankfully it'll be getting warmer (slightly!)

    Cheers Hilary

    1. Thanks, Hilary. I know I told Shelly above that latkes were overrated but that was only to make her Sweetman feel better. They're really delicious!

  8. Frosty looking but beautiful photographs. Ooh. -4. Reminds me of three years ago when I drove from Virginia to Illinois to my younger sister's funeral. I'm going to have to talk about this when I see her. She always complained about some of her 8 children getting married in December. My van registered 0, but I know it was colder than that!

Sorry about your husband's illness. That flu is wicked, especially for those whose immune system is compromised. My disabled daughter is also having a rough time now that the temperatures have dropped, though not as low as yours. Hope Mr. A will feel better soon. I know how down this can be for all concerned. But to find a peaceful corner, as you have this Christmas/Chanukah season, is what we all must do in the dark, foggy times in our lives.

    Take care...

  10. Brrrr. But sunshine can sure help things seem warmer. All the best to Mr.A - that's scary, but I'm sure he's getting the best care from you and doctors.
I have Jewish friends and the lighting of the candles, etc has so much meaning.
Take care and no doubt the season shall brighten all spirits. (plus latkes help too)

  12. I'm a bit late here, and I'm very sorry to hear Mr A has been down with the flu. It must knock him for six. I hope you are alright, Ros. The rays of sunshine in your garden look beautiful, like the light of the world has been switched on. Glad to hear you have had celebrations to keep the cheer, but I hope you've had some peace too.

  16. So the miracle was the replenishment of lamp oil?
Eating wonderful food to celebrate the preservation of light sounds about right to me.
Wishing Mr A the best of health for the holidays, and I remind myself that I must look up what it is the Jews celebrate at this time of year. I am sadly uneducated!
