I may have blogged about telephone spam calls before so apologies if I’m repeating myself. [I’m not really turning into that dreaded elderly aunt who tells the same anecdotes each time you visit... am I?]
The official advice, when I reported the problem to BT, is
to never answer, but last week my cousin was abroad and it might have been him
so I answered. I didn’t recognise the voice so I said, ‘I don’t know you, do I?’ He responded with a string of expletives. I hung up. That really is no
way to sell anything.
My Gmail account filters out email spam very effectively
but I keep hearing of people who have had their emails hacked into so that all
their contacts think they’re stranded in Spain with no money. This has just happened to a lovely blogging friend, Ann Best, who blogs at Ann Carbine Best's Blog. Hopefully no money was handed over by anyone but Ann now has the hassle of setting up a new email account and contacting people. Has this sort of scam ever worked? Is there anyone out there who would really send out money without further investigation? I suppose there must be or it wouldn’t keep happening.
I’m guessing that everyone on twitter has been followed
by a sewer specialist after mentioning toilets... No? Just me then! Last
week I tweeted about having a scale and polish and was followed by a dentist!
I tweeted with my mouth closed for the rest of the day. Seriously though, what I
find offensive are those spammers who expect me to fall for the line, ‘This
photo of you made me laugh out loud’ with a link. I don’t click on those links as
I was born many thousands of days ago and I always block and report them which
is satisfying because they instantly drop off my timeline.
The problem is that, even on Twitter, as soon as one spammer
has been hit on the head another pops up somewhere else. So until effective
legislation can stop them, all we can do is follow the official advice:
- Don’t answer
- Ignore all contact
- Don’t respond in any way................ erm.............. sorry........... can't stand it......
........... weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!
How do you cope with spam?
I agree with you.I get these phonecalls too.I usually ignore them but last week it rang four times in a row so I picked it up,mainly to have some peace.I asked the female why she phoned four times and of course she said this was her first time. I said please do not ring again I know it was you.She finished by saying ,"I'm not listening to this I'm hanging up" I was so mad. Twitter is a pain with spam,I wonder if they ever gain any business from it.
ReplyDeleteI've basically stopped answering the landline! Those recorded calls are the worst. As for the rest, the only thing that TRULY annoys me is when I get people who don't even follow me sending me tweets to buy their book! ARGH!
ReplyDeleteI'm hounded by people who phone up to tell me I'm having problems with my computer and could I please turn it on. I don't like being ordered around my house by strangers - I tell them I don't own a computer. The latest annoyance is PPI misselling. If I have an issue with my bank I'll go direct to them, not through a third party who will take a cut of my money!
ReplyDeleteOh... I guess spam DOES annoy me :-)
I used to have fun with the cold callers - many long stories but the best was when one chap asked if I had a couple of minutes to spare. I told him I was just home from the doc who had given me 3 months to live. His squirming was very satisfactory. I registered with the telephone advisory service and almost all UK spam calls have stopped.
ReplyDeleteTwitter is a pain in the tonsils for the spamming and selling. I agree with Tali - strangers selling their book to me blatantly is a real turn off and why I deleted my goodreads account too.
I suppose we just have to take the good with the bad...?
Nice post - and keep blowing!
Yes! to everything that's been said. And as you say, Rosalind, I've had to get a new email account. This wasn't a problem of my not answering, ignoring the email, etc, which I've done regularly for some time. But this was a hacker coming in and then sending an email to all my contacts saying, in my "voice," I'm in Spain needing money. It's awful! So on the advice of another friend, I'm getting a really awesome password for all my accounts. I'm thinking I'll put up another post about this! And I'll link back to YOUR post here.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Ros, for getting the word out to YOUR followers. We need to help each other all we can!

Hi Anne, it's awful how they're so rude on the phone, isn't it. I wonder if anyone has ever bought anything from a spam tweet. I hardly ever read them. They all have a certain look and I skim past them. If I notice them then they're blocked.
ReplyDeleteHi Talli, those who don't follow but advertise their books directly to you are the ones that truly deserve to be blocked in my opinion.
Hi Annalisa, Thos e phone calls are awful. I had one recently telling me that someone in my family had had a car accident. That's so cruel.
Hi Nettie, I've tried the silly story too. I once pretended the caller was an old friend and started rabbiting on about rubbish. They hung up.
ReplyDeleteHi Ann, they do say that we all ought to change our passwords regularly but I have such trouble remembering them all! Hope you're all sorted again.
Ros,
ReplyDeleteThis should help you re the phone calls. A free service too!

And this one is for spam snail mail. Again free. It does take about three weeks to kick in, but is effective.

Happy Wednesday!
Thanks for that Maria, but I've already tried. They won't/can't do anything about calls from abroad and all of ours are 'International Out of the Area' ones.
ReplyDeleteHi Rosalind, even in India we get such phone calls. And that too 3 in the afternoon. I have heard of many people whose accounts were hacked and that they were asking for money. Wonder what people get from hacking into accounts. Most of us are too clever to fall for such tricks.
ReplyDeleteBtw..followed from Ann Best's blog.
Hi Ros .. when I moved I ended up with no landline - and if I get an odd call on the mobile I don't answer! Spam - and Ann's hacking thing is incredible ...
ReplyDeleteHopefully we're sensible enough to ignore that sort of thing ...
With thoughts to all - it's such a waste of time and energy ..
Cheers Hilary
I mostly ignore it. Lately I think my email people opened up the flood gates because tons of stuff is slipping through the filters. Grrrr.
ReplyDeleteCold callers on the phone? Ask them to tell you all about it and then lay the phone down gently and walk away. They'll talk to themselves for quite a while before they realise you've gone. And it costs them money.
ReplyDeleteI talked about telemarketers today too! THey drive me nuts. Not answering doesn't work - we've had one # call 3x a day for weeks now. So annoying!!!
ReplyDeleteI have a caller ID and if a number appears I do not recognize, I do not answer. Then delete them off. Fortunately, I have had not problems with overseas calls. Thank goodness. We have enough here without all that. To answer your question about my red button, no I did not make it. I would not have a clue to how to do anything like that. I just do the basics to get my blogs up each day. Another blogging friend had made it, and I ask permission to use it. She very graciously agreed. I am sure she would not mind you using it. I have seen a few others with it after I got mine.
ReplyDeleteWe got two calls recently from a hacker pretending to be with microsoft technology or some such thing. Totally bogus. It's a sad situation when people are so intent on stealing other people's information and identities.
ReplyDeleteHi Ros, this sort of thing has happened numerous times here in Malaysia. People seem to be so gullible, especially when money is involved!
ReplyDeleteDuncan In Kuantan
The Twitter direct messages are so spam-filled I ignore them all. And don't even get me started on Google Plus! Oh my goodness, what a spam factory that place is. I ignore it too. And I ignore the phone when it rings. I'm very good at ignoring potential spammers! wish they would all just go away!
ReplyDeleteThey used have the spelling of my name wrong so whenever they called and said
ReplyDelete"can I speak to Mr wrong name", I would reply
"I'm sorry but I'm not interested." to which they would reply,
"but you don't know why I'm calling yet." so I would say
"go on then, why are you calling."
"I am not trying to sell you anyth..."
"I'm sorry, I'm not interested." and down goes the phone. I am never rude as my brother used to work for one of these companies as it was the only job he could get at the time.
I detest the phone calls so much I've unplugged my house phone permanently and people can only get in touch with me via my mobile. It really is tiresome. I don't know how the spammers have the energy!
ReplyDeleteTo Another Migraine: Yes, my (late) little brother worked for a time as telemarketer. The job market IS the pits, and I feel sorry for such people like our brothers. But it IS so aggravating. Sometimes, though, I have been interested in the call. But rarely. And I rarely answer an "unknown" on my landline. And I have no voice mail on it. Cell phone, that's better. If I don't answer, if it's someone who wants to leave a message, they can. We just leave in an invasive world, and have to do the best we can to find the PEACE that we need!
ReplyDeleteAnn Best, Author of In the Mirror & Other Memoirs
Recently telemarketers have been calling my cell phone. I'm used to them ringing my home phone off the hook, but it's even more frustrating that they bother me on my cell. Now I just don't answer unrecognizable long distance numbers at all. Hope the spammers get the message, and leave you alone. Julie
ReplyDeleteWhat about when they target old people who don't understand and end up buying stuff they don't need? I had to deal with a mobile phone that arrived at my mother's place and regular payments leaving her bank account. She didn't remember having ordered it and was only annoyed that they addressed her by her first name!
ReplyDeleteMiriam, who would love you to buy her book. (I haven't actually published one yet, but do remember me for when I do!)
The calls drive my 85 year old mum in law mad and she can't quite get her head around the idea that it isn't personal and she isn't being stalked and it is mostly computer generated calls [she gets a lot of those silent ones] that drop off when they get through else where. We have tried all the usual - including constantly clicking the hash key which was advise in a forum..but they still keep coming...
ReplyDeleteMy parents live abroad, and my partner's parents are elderly. These are the only reasons I still have a landline. I've taken to laying the phone down quietly when it's 'real' people. The ones that really irritate me are the recorded ones - five or six times a day.
ReplyDeleteUgh! I hate those calls. They always seem to call during nap time or dinner. I went online and opted out of most of the calls, though -- I wonder if UK has the same thing? Most of the other calls seemed to be from collections agencies for the former residents of our house. Well, technically, their daughter's ex-boyfriend, who must be deeply in debt or something. Anyway... I ignored those calls for a long time, but have lately been answering them to let them know he doesn't live here. :) So... slowly but surely they're decreasing. I'm sorry you're going crazy. It IS maddening.
ReplyDeleteWhat a pain. I love the computer because I can chose when I go on it but phones drive me crazy. Last week I was in Helena without TV or phone. It was quiet heaven.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to buy a whistle, that's hilarious!
ReplyDeleteHah! Like your whistle...I block and report pam on twitter and try to avoid answering the landline at home...
ReplyDeleteI recieve all kinds of spam calls. From mysterious "PC Wizards" who claim to work on the behalf on Microsoft to silent calls and telemarketers that make your ears bleed. I'm ex-directory and with TPS but that makes no difference. As soon a call comes from abroad, say India or Asia, local authorities can't do anything. So first thing I do is to check the incoming call's number on the web.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.tellows.co.uk has been quite a help so far. Once I can confirm the caller is a spammer or scammer I just start belching into the receiver as load as I can. I have to admit, this is a rather rude way to deal with such calls and yet it pales beside the insolence we are to suffer from those wretched nuisance callers.
