Those Spammers

I have had to change my commenting facility on this blog. I have gone back to Registered Users and Open ID only. I apologise to all those genuine commenters who may be affected by this but I’m afraid the spammers have finally got to me.

I’m not obsessive about stats but I do occasionally look at my blog statistics. Usually there are five or six people on the blog at any one time. I don’t know who, of course, just the number of visitors. But every now and then there is a massive spike in the number of visits. I've shown an example below when some time late on 10th July my blog received 134 visits in the space of about half an hour.

This is not a cause for rejoicing, leaping around or patting myself on the back because I run such a successful blog. It is a sign that spammers have visited and I am about to be bombarded by spam comments.

Spam comments are illogical. Quite often they are no more than a string of disconnected words. I know that they don’t read this blog but if any of them do, can I point out that I refuse to allow myself to read what they say. I look at enough to establish that this is spam and then I delete it. I never visit their website and I would never, ever click on any of the links that they might include in the comment. In other words, Spammer, “You are wasting your time!”

It’s a shame that people trawl the Internet in this way. It’s an annoyance that they have affected my blog to such an extent that I have to change my security settings. I’m sure that most of my spammers are harmless enough. I wouldn’t know because, like I say, I’ve never visited, but there are, as we know, harmful people lurking, and that’s the biggest shame of all.

  1. I do see why you've done it - do let me know if I fall outside your categories, and let me know what I need to be included. I'd hate to be excluded!

  2. I cannot stand spammers but I moderate all my comments rather than close off some sincere and good people who wish to comment on my posts, but this is just me. I totally understand. I just came across your blog today and wanted to respond to your post. Warm greetings from Montreal, Canada. :)

  3. Hi Ros - thanks ... I get some spam, never look at my stats ... but you have sent me off to my comments section where I found six blogging friends' comments waiting for moderation - why they do there I've no idea. I try and check and probably had about 3 weeks ago... these slipped in! Some lovely comments too ...

So I'm grateful you've jogged my brain to check up ... it's an irritation ... as long as I don't get hundreds I'm ok ... and I never acknowledge them, just make sure they get sent to spam and taken off the blog should they appear.

Good luck and take care ... cheers Hilary

  4. Sadly, lots of less enlightened people DO click on the links, in the same way that some silly people give away their bank details to phishers.

  5. I've done the same thing. I don't understand where they joy in spamming is - it makes no sense at all to me. Hope that fixes the issue for you!

  6. I"ve been lucky at being under the spam radar. However, it is ridiculous and serves no purpose. I understand your concerns and you have to protect your blog

  7. I wonder if these spammers a really people at all? More likely some machine in Russia searching for 'key words'. I have occasionally thought about collating my stats to see what those key words are, and then I decide I can't be bothered. (I nearly said "ar*ed" then but I don't want you to block me!

  8. That's actually why I like using Blogger. I have pretty loose comment restrictions and don't get a whole lot of spam. When I've done wordpress in the past however I always got them from time to time.

  9. Spammers and phishers are pain-in-the-butt spoilsports. I get some of those kinda comments from time to time, but I just delete them and forget about it. If I got them more frequently, though, I'm afraid I'd have to do something about it, too. Could be why so many bloggers have added that "Prove you're not a robot" thingie for commenters to click.

  10. I sympathise, it is so annoying. I've also recently starting having another issue where I can't even visit any blogger sites. My search engine won't let me go to them, yet I know they are trusted blogging buddies.
Technology is great, but there is a price.
