It's only a teddy bear!

(For those who view my blog through non-formatting readers, the following is a poem - OK, son?!)

It’s ok to chat with a cat, so I’ve heard,
Cause you know that a cat can hear every word
But you don’t want to talk with inanimate things,
Like your teddy, whose stuffing is held in with string.

Just a minute! A cat doesn’t care about words.
He would much rather chase after dormice or birds.
The teddy, however, absorbs all you say.
He collects up your words in his kapok each day.

So your teddy bear holds all your wishes and thoughts.
He knows all of your hopes, all those demons you’ve fought.
Please ignore those who say he’s a toy. It’s not true.
He’s the one true custodian of all that is you.

Don’t you just love your teddy bears?

Here are a few of mine:

  1. I don't have bears - but talk endlessly to any inanimate object that will listen. Each morning I open the curtains and say, 'Hello day' - the grandson gave that 'grandma's going bonkers' look when he came to stay!

  2. Teddy bears are very important. Mine, much cherished and cuddled, was given to my son. He left it at home when he grew up(my son not the teddy bear). I then gave it to my first grand child and she passed it on to her
siblings. I do hope that the wishes and dreams of all of us are still there.

  3. Mine was next to my face as I struggled with my painful colon cancer. He heard my every groan and cuddled my cheeks as needed. Now he's perched on my dresser watching over me along with angels real and imagined I hope.

  4. Yes. I love Teddy Bears. My childhood one was named Pooky and my 2nd husband put him in the trunk of our Caddy and sold it off to some man.

    1. Some people don't understand how important a teddy bear can be. I'm sorry your Pooky was sold.

  5. Oh Ros, you brought tears to my eyes with this. What a lovely poem and tribute to our lifelong best friends. It's perfect! I have such a teddy and I've had her since I was seven….the things she knows…!

  6. Hi Ros - I don't have a Teddy .. or anything from those far off days ... but now I have Hardwick a wire-haired fox terrier of my mother's, which she took custodian of on the death of one of her residents - he was a huge solace to her ... she talked to him for a while non-stop and always had to be around. Even into hospital - but I took him home at night .. he was with her at the end. I really should get Hardwick out and tell some stories - he's here and safe with me ...

Wonderful poem .. I'd talk to the cat too ... but none here .. cheers Hilary

PS some friends from here are up in Leicester today to see the exhibition ... I'll catch up with their news tomorrow ..

    1. But, Hilary, you do have a teddy. His name is Hardwick and he is the custodian of all your mother's inner thoughts. I'm glad he's safe with you.
And don't forget to let me know when/if you come up to Leicester to see our amazing Cathedral.

    1. Plush collection!?! Wooo! That sounds posh. You'll make mine feel inferior!

  8. Lovely - both the poem and the teddies. I only have a couple of teddy bears but I do have Betty, who featured in one of my blogs last week. I too have written poems about toys - some of them are on my blog on a separate page if you're interested.
So you're not mad - or we both are!
