And I'm sure you are amazing but this post isn't really about you, it's about cats and it's about my ruminations on why there are so many sayings that use cats to put the message across. Here are just a few by way of illustration:-
- cat on a hot tin roof
- raining cats and dogs
- cat nap
- weak as a kitten
- scaredy cat
- like herding cats
- fat cats
- grinning like a Cheshire cat
- copy cat
- cool cat
- cat walk
- a catty person
- cats' eyes in the road
- cat-in-hell's chance
- cat got your tongue
- cats whiskers radios (It wasn't really a whisker. It was a fine wire that looked like a whisker.)
Well, I was watching our two cats wash their faces after their supper yesterday and I couldn't help admiring their whiskers. Mabel's are black and shiny. Charlie's are white and bushy. Both sets are fine examples of cats' whiskers and both cats are quite convinced that they're the cats' whiskers!

ReplyDeleteI used to have cats - one we had as a kitten, who was naughty till the day she died. And the other was a stray who adopted us (well, the kids fed her while I wasn't looking, which might have something to do with why she stayed) - and she was never naughty. I think she'd been so neglected as a kitten she dare not to anything to risk being sent away again!

Charlie reminds me of my son's cat - a dense grey coat and an attitude.
ReplyDeleteI can't think of a better excuse for a break, Ros. Cats are the cat's whiskers. I wish I could have one, but we travel too much and cats and boats are not a happy combination anyway. Yours are just gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteLovely post Ros, laughed and laughed at the introduction. We too love our furry friends, at one point we had six....the result of daughters bringing home strays! We have two now, Dude and Stan, one is black and white and the other is ginger but what I love about them the most is their personalities. We wouldn't be without them.

ReplyDeleteFor the first time in years, I'm cat-free. Obviously, it won't last because some poor little stray is sure to find its way to our door, but it feels very strange. It also means I have to admire everyone else's cats.
I was always scared of cats until some kind family member gave my son one for his birthday. Her cat had a litter and a friend of mine was taking one but it had to stay in our house for a night. It was a spitfire, quite vicious and I was glad to see it go so imagine how I felt when my son's gift was one from the same little. Jake was the image of your Mabel and an adorable cat who thought he was a dog,we had him for 16 yrs. I don't know if I would have my own cat again but I agree with you that they are lovely.

ReplyDeleteI don;t have a cat now as she got very sick and we had to say goodbye to her last April.
I haven't met a cat yet that didn't know he/she was the cat's whiskers. And they are the best!
