If we cared


I’ve had a go at one of Jenny Matlock’s weekend challenges. I can't get Blogger to put a link on her badge but please visit her blog. There’s always something there to make you smile. This week her challenge is to post up a piece of writing in any style as long as it’s less than 100 words and includes the phrase:

It doesn’t have to be that way

‘Excellent!’ I thought when I read her prompt. ‘I now have an excuse for one of my regular moans.’ So here goes:

Why is it nation fighting nation,
Always man versus man,
Another journalist’s sensation
As the bad news hits the fan?
We say we care about each other
But that clearly isn’t true.
What with brother killing brother
I’m afraid for me and you.
If we cared we’d not permit
All of that murderous display.
It’s our world we’re messing up. It
Doesn’t have to be that way.

    Totally agree. It may sound a little odd, but I often think of Gene Roddenberry's vision for the world in Star Trek - how we'll never be able to take the next big leap towards the stars as humans until we learn to really work as a team and erase all those divisions.

    A very thoughtful verse. I like the ending especially. There's always some other way, some alternative, to work things out.

    Hi Ros .. great poem .. and one we should all consider - it's that "control" that people in power seem to get .. not nice at all - in many ways of the world .. bullying, war to name a couple ..

    It is the world we're messing up - and it doesn't have to be this way = so right on ..

    I love this "moan." I tend to do "rants" myself. The last one I wrote is about reality t.v. and the dumbing down of America. I always write something for Jenny's Saturday Centus, and Alphabe-Thursday, as well.

    I am so with you on this! I hate to even turn on the news anymore...and when we do, we can't walk away from it. It's like watching a train wreck...standing riveted in place not believing what we're seeing. Ugh. You're right. It definitely doesn't have to be this way! Thanks for stopping by.

    If only it wasn't this way....will there ever be a time when it isn't? I hope that time comes and our children or their children have a better way to work things out.

    This is so true, and if you go back to the beginning of time, it seems we have this same theme and questions even back then.....I feel it will always be the case....we need to each make our own corner of the world as best we can and hope that all follows....then there's hope...

    It starts at birth, I'm sure ... and it only get's worse as we age ... see the effects of bullying on young children, watch people bully and hate each other on reality tv ... add in religion, politics, power and greed ... So glad you joined in this week ... your rant was very well written!
